San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a city that effortlessly blends old-world charm with vibrant modernity, making it a beloved destination for travelers from the United States. Nestled in the heart of Mexico, this "perfectly imperfect" city captivates me with its colorful colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and an atmosphere rich with history and culture.
San Miguel’s allure lies in its unique contrasts—elegant art galleries and rustic markets, world-class restaurants and cozy street food stalls, luxurious spas and quaint local shops. The city’s imperfections—weathered buildings, uneven streets—only add to its charm, creating an authentic experience that feels both timeless and welcoming.
Beyond its aesthetic instagram appeal, San Miguel is known for its thriving arts scene, warm hospitality, and a vibrant community of locals and expats alike. Whether you’re exploring its UNESCO-listed historic center, savoring its culinary delights, or simply soaking in the laid-back vibe, San Miguel offers an experience that is as enriching as it is unforgettable. This is a place where every moment feels beautifully imperfect—just like the city itself
There are two primary airports for traveling to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico:
1. Queretaro Airport (QRO) - About 1 hour from San Miguel, offering several daily flights and international customs. Shuttle services and private drivers should be booked in advance.
2. Del Bajio Airport (BJX) - Leon/Guanajuato: Located about 1 hour and 15 minutes from San Miguel. This is the most popular option, with multiple daily flights, international customs, and on-site major rental car companies. Shuttle services and private drivers should be booked in advance.
I would advise against getting a rental car during your time in San Miguel de Allende. San Miguel is a very small town and everything is within walking or short cab distance.

San Miguel is nestled in the mountains, which keeps the weather pleasantly temperate. That's another reason to love it here! In mid-October, the weather is typically fall perfection — with daytime temperatures in the 70s and nighttime lows in the 50s. My top tip is to dress in layers. It can feel warmer in the sun, so try walking on the shady side of the street, but you'll definitely need a jacket once the sun goes down. Remember, everything here is outdoors! Restaurants and rooftops have umbrellas and retractable roofs for rain or intense heat, but be prepared to enjoy being outside.
